WQTL has new three students in spring 2017, after long winter.

Seunghyuk Lee is an M.S. student. He majored envrionmental and energy engineering in Myongji University. He is now working for empirical test of Gravitational-Driven Membrane (GDM). He also would like to study how to reduce nitrite in wastewater treatment.

Woohyung Sim, who is also an M.S student, majored in environmental engineering in Inha University. He is interested in the fate of emerging micropollutants during oxidative water treatment

Nguyen Pham, Ha Thi Thai (She is called Ha) is from Vietnam. Her research topic is UV AOPs treatment of Anatoxin a.

Furthermore, Jiwoon Ra and Yuri Lee continued their study as Ph.d. students in WQTL.

WQTL members(Jaedon, Soyoung, and younggun) including professor Lee went to Singapore to Participate in MICROPOL & ECOHAZARD CONFERENCE 2015.
 

This conference topic are micropollutants and hazard materials toward ecosystem and to discuss solution, policy related with these harmful things. All of them have their own different interesting about micropollutant or ecohazard material: T&O compound, Antibiotic resistant bacteria&gene, NDMA which is a kind of Nitrogenous disinfection byproducts. Also MICROPOL conference introduced new emerging micropollutants which can collect issues.

All of members shared their knowledge vigorously. Especially, soyoung said “I got new interesting information and what I want to learn from this conference enough. It was good chance to my research expansion”

WQTL members including professor Lee went to busan, korea to participate in IEEC 2015 Korean society of environmental engineers.

They were very excited to contact scientific information of their field. All of the information would be helpful to their each study. Especially, Jiwoon said “it is first time to come conference to me. I think it’s the good chance to learn many different studies of others and communicate with them. Also meeting people whom I saw in only paper is the best experience to me. I want to go these conferences often.”

They finished their conference poster session or oral presentation with good attitude! All of them said “see 
you again at IEEC 2015”

Sungeun Lim who was researcher in WQTL got prize as excellent oral presentation presenter from 2014
Korean society of environmental engineers conference. Her topic was NDMA formation during ozonation of
daminozide: reaction kinetics, mechanisms. Although she went to EAWAG in switzerland as doctor degree,
all of WQTL members want to congratulate her award news sincerely. We wish her study will continue
better and make it successful.

Jung-Suk is a new master degree student in WQTL since 2015. August. He graduated from ChungNam National University majoring in material science and engineering before joinning WQTL. He is planning to research on electrolysis to make the oxidants to treat waste water.

Linh Nguyen is a new member of WQTL as master student since September, 2015. She used to be an intern student in WQTL for four months via the IEAEC program. Majoring is Advanced Aquaculture in Can Tho University, Cantho, Vietnam. She is conducting on Ferrate (IV) oxidation on Roxithromycin by using bioassay.

By 25th August 2015, GIST held Summer Commencement Ceremony, it is glad to celebrate one more member of WQTL, Dongwhi Lee, completed his master degree in success. 

After graduate,Dongwhi Lee continue his research in WQTL as researcher to collect more data from his 
experiment. It has been great pleasure for the WQTL members to?be able to work with him, even to the point that we have become more than just colleagues.

Also joining the celebration was one intern student Woongbae Lee, also freshman Jungsuk Woo who 
completed his undergraduate degree in Chungnam university and will be joining our lab as MS student.

The best wishes to him on his life and his career.

This summer our lab received two undergraduate students as interns from outside GIST. 

They are Jungsuk woo from Chungnam University and Jungmoon ryu from Korea maritime and ocean University.They stayed in GIST for approximately one month (ended in 1st August 2015) to join a program called "GIST SESE Summer Internship Program and Environmental Olympiad". The research topic that they took was about electrolysis of seawater to make the oxidants to treat aquaculture waste water.

Throughout the internship, they learned many new and resourceful experiences such as studying about basic theory of electrolysis and oxidation using hypochlorite and its fate in seawater background. During the study, they had enjoyed exploring Gwangju with WQTL members including playing in the valley water, game with WQTL lab members and tasting the delicious Korea's south region foods. They said “we learned about graduate student's mind and life. Also governmental project is nice chance to us. We want to sincerely thank to all of the WQTL lab members for being kind and making us more professional."

Ji Woon joined as a new student on a course of master degree in WQTL since 2015, March. he graduated
from GIST college majoring in chemistry. In WQTL, he will study on transformation products of microtoxins
and prediction, verification of their toxicity.

Yuri is a new master degree student in WQTL since 2015. March. She graduated from Ewha Womans
University majoring in environmental science & engineering before joining WQTL. She is planning to research
on reaction kinetics of DOM in WWTP effluent with UV/S2O8, which is one of UV/AOP.

​As February approached its end, on the 25th February 2015, GIST held graduation ceremonies to award
degrees to their doctoral, master, and bachelor graduates.
This semester, five WQTL residents receiving MS graduate degrees include: Dahee Jeon, Kim Jisoo,
Donghyeon Lee, Na Soyoung and Zahra Ramadhani. It has been great pleasure for the WQTL members to
be able to work with them, even to the point that we have become more than just colleagues.

Also joining the celebration was two intern student Salman Karim and Linh, also freshman Lee Yu Ri and Ra Ji
Un who completed his undergraduate degree in GIST and will be joining our lab as MS student.
We sincerely congratulate Dahee , Jisoo, Donghyeon , Soyoung and Zahra for succesfully completing their
study.

Another year goes by, another winter comes! On the 25th and 26th of January 2015, WQTL visited Muju
Resort for a night to conduct a workshop. With a refreshing and different surrounding we had the opportunity
to discuss the progress we have made in 2014, whether its academic, research or personal-related issues.

At the same time, we took the opportunity to welcome two new freshmen that will join our lab this coming
spring semester. They are Jiwoon Ra and Yuri Lee, who completed their undergraduate studies in GIST and
Ewha Women University, respectively. The new students also participated in winter sports activities, such as
ski, snowboarding, and snow sledding. Overall, it was a fun and memorable event.

Prof Yunho Lee, Soyoung Na (M.S.), and Sung Eun Lim (researcher) attended 3rd Water Research Conference
in Shenzhen, China from 11th to 14th Jan 2015.

The conference addressed two main topics: 1) catalytic processes and new materials and technologies in water/wastewater treatment and 2) water reuse and product recovery from water/wastewater treatment.
All attendees were provided with cutting-edge and profound knowledge of the topics from various sessions
and talks by eminent invited speakers.

Prof Lee delivered two presentations about transformation of β-lactam antibiotics by ferrate (VI) and kinetic
aspects and NDMA formation of the transformation of Ranitidine which was supposed to be presented by Zahra R.
Hidayat (M.S.) who unfortunately could not join the conference. Soyoung Na and Sung Eun Lim also presented
their current researches about the elimination of organic micropollutants with horseradish peroxidase-hydrogen
peroxide process and transformation mechanisms of hydrazine derivatives to NDMA.

Overall the conference was highly inspirational and informative by provoking valuable debates among professionals and also students and offering networking opportunities within them.

Prof. Lee and Donghyun Lee and Jisoo Kim (M.S student) joined IWA (International Water Association)
regional conference on water reuse and energy in Deagu.

IWA is the inthernational conference for management of municipal water. The combination of water and
energy is one of the important and pressing issue to be settled for both current and next generations.
Therefore, this conference was providing a platform to be discussed and share about science and technology
in water reuse, potable and non-potable water reuse, water-energy nexus in water reuse, emerging
contaminants and reused water qualities, etc.

Prof Yunho Lee , Anggita Karlesa 'Leshya' (PhD student) and Younggun Yoon (Phd student) joined The 12th
UNU & GIST Joint Programme Symposium, Vietnam. This symposium is an annual international symposium
which has been held in Korea and South East Asia Country every year. In October 2014, The International
Environmental Analysis and Education Center (IEAEC) (GIST, Korea) in partnership with Hue University of
Sciences organized the 12th annual symposium hosted by the UNU and GIST Joint Programme, "Issues on
Environmental Multi-Pollutants".

This symposium was take place in Da Nang, Vietnam, October 27-29, 2014.

The 2014 Symposium aims to serve as a focal point to bring together leading experts and researchers to
discuss the unique challenges dealing with diverse issues on multi-pollutants that can be occurred in any
environmental circumstances. Many talks were multidisciplinary with emphasis on the broad environmental
impacts that varying aspects of environmental multi-pollutants have on the ecosystem and public health.

In this conference, Prof. Yunho Lee presented Gravity-Driven Membrane (GDM) process and Leshya
presented about Transformation of β-lactam Antibiotics During Water Treatment With Ferrate (HFeVIO4-)
and Chlorine Oxidation : Reaction Kinetics,Transformation Product and Changes of Antibacterial Activity.
It was a great opportunity for us and all participants to interact with each other, also enjoyed the tropical
weather and visit several Vietnam tourism place (My Son Anchor, Hoi Ahn Traditional Village and Danang
Han River).

This conference was an international conference which was held in Lotte City Hotel Jeju in Korea.
(2014.11.5~8) Dahee and Soyoung attended the conference with each poster. (Dahee: Transformation of
ranitidine during water treatments with chlorine, ozone, UV, and UV/H2O2: Kinetics and effects on NDMA
formation potential / Soyoung: Elimination of organic micropollutants during enhanced wastewater treatment
with horseradish peroxidase-hydrogen peroxide (HRP-H2O2) process). The main topic of this conference was
"Low-Energy and New Materials System Desalination". And the presentation and discussion were divided into
8 sessions, which were World status of water desalination, New materials and Nano technology, Membrane
biofouling, Membrane distillation and brine, Low energy desalination and FO, Solar energy driven desalination.
In this conference, it was especially useful for the academic and industry people in desalination area to have
a discussion about differences in each field and share information.

Prof. Lee and Jaedon Shin (PhD student) joined European Chemistry conference in Istanbul. EuCheMS
(European Association for Chemical and Molecular Sciences) which was founded in 1970 have 46 member
societies which in total represent 150,000 individual chemists in academia, industry and government in over
35 countries across Europe since 1970. Prof. Lee presented about interplay between oxidant stability and
efficiency of micropollutant abatement in conventional and advanced oxidation process, and Jaedon
presented about oxidation of algal derived taste and odor compounds by ferrate.

Yonggun joined as a new student on course of Ph.D in WQTL since 2014. September. In his previous master
degree at GIST, he studied on bacterial activities in relation with iron mineral transformation by Iron Reduction
which is called Hematite. In WQTL, he will study on inactivation of antibiotic resistance genes by several
oxidative treatment for clean and safe water supply.

Dong is a new master degree student in WQTL since 2014. September. He graduated from Myung-Ji University

Salman Karim will stay in WQTL for 2014.Sep to 2015.Feb as an intern student via the IEAEC program. He is
from Pakistan and did his BS at the University of the Punjab, Lahore. He also completed his master degree
work at the same university in 2014. During his stay, he will work on the sunlight/chlorine combination
process as innovative oxidative water treatment technology.

As August approached its end, GIST had once more held a Commencement Ceremony for Fall Semester 2014.
Nornazwah Hasan Bisri participated this event to officially celebrate her success for completing the study for
master degree. Her thesis was entitled "Treatment of source separated urine by gel-entrapped bacteria
process: efficiency of nitrification and micropollutant elimination". She will be staying in WQTL for a further
6 months to finish off her research project.
Also joining the celebration was Yonggun Yoon, who completed his master degree under the supervision of
Professor Hor, and will be joining our lab as Ph.D student.

This summer our lab received two undergraduate students as interns from outside GIST. They are Changmin
Lee from Sungkyuwan University and Yeounghoon Jo from Inha University. They stayed in GIST for
approximately one month (ended in 1st August 2014) to join a program called "GIST SESE Summer
Internship Program and Environmental Olympiad".

The research topic that they took was about the prediction of elimination efficiency of micropollutants during
ozonation. Throughout the internship, they learned many new and resourceful experiences such as studying
about basic theory of ozonation and quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR), its application
towards micropollutants elimination efficiency prediction, and arranging excel results into presentation and
poster material. In between the study, they had enjoyed exploring Gwangju with friends including attending
a baseball game with WQTL lab members and tasting the delicious Korea's south region foods.

When asked about his journey during the internship program Changmin stated, "all experiences were new
and helpful. I learned about graduate student's mind and life that will be helpful because I plan to continue
study to graduate school especially in environmental area. Therefore I want to sincerely thanked all of the
WQTL lab members for being kind and making me feel at home."

Starting from July 1st to August 31st, 2014, Professor Yunho Lee is staying in Switzerland to join research
works in Laboratory for Water Quality and Treatment (LTQE) at Ecole Polytechnique F?d?rale de Lausanne
(EPFL). EPFL is one of two Federal Institute of Technology in Switzerland.

In collaboration with the Drinking Water Chemistry Group at Eawag, the current main research at LQTE
includes:

1) Chemical oxidation processes in water treatment: kinetics and mechanisms of formation of
oxidation/disinfection by-products and transformation of micropollutants
2) Toxicological assessment of transformation products
3) Characterization of oxidation treatment processes
4) Advanced oxidation processes
5) Kinetics and mechanisms of disinfection processes
6) Biogeochemical processes in groundwater-infiltration systems: experimental and modeling work
7) In situ and out-of-ground treatment of reduced groundwaters.

Throughout the two-months visit, Prof Lee will participate research programs with Prof urs von Gunten as
the leader of LQTE, which focus on oxidation and disinfection processes during drinking water and
wastewater treatment.

of slow sand filtration, biological activated carbon and other biological and physicochemical purification processes.
This conference was held in Nagoya and many researchers and experts from water supplies and manufacturers took part
in the conference. In this conference, Prof. Yunho Lee presented Gravity-Driven Membrane (GDM) process.
There was a good opportunity for participants to interact with each other.

WQTL 2014 Spring April Event,

Professor Urs von Gunten's visit to WTQL

Prof. Urs von Gunten visited Korea for about a week. He is a professor in EPFL and a senior research scientist
in EAWAG, Switzerland and a leading scientist in the areas of water quality and treatment. The first visit was to
our school (SESE) and laboratory (WQTL). He stayed in GIST from April 8th - 10th 2014 to give a talk about
"Management of micro-pollutants in the urban water cycle: The Swiss approach" in SESE Seminar event organized by Yunho Lee.

Alongside this event, we availed opportunity to meet and greet Professor Urs von Gunten during his stay in
GIST, include visiting some Korean traditional village and also share knowledge time in some individual
research discussion with some SESE student.
In addition, WQTL-GIST in collaboration with BK21 and several top University in Korea organized an event on
Friday, April 11th, 2014, "Advance Oxidation Water Workshop" that was held in SNU, Seoul. In this workshop,
we could listen several pioneer speaker of this field start with: Prof Urs von Gunten as main speaker given a
lecture with titled "Oxidation processes in water treatment: options and limitations for micropollutant elimination".

Last but not least, WQTL deeply gratitude and thankful for Prof. Urs von Gunten's kindly time, guidance and
willingness to share his knowledge by coming to Korea. It is an honor for WQTL being chosen to organize Prof.
Urs von Gunten's visit to GIST which is known as pioneer Professor in water research field also belong one of
best world class Water research institute, EAWAG, Switzerland.

Last week, from the 8th to 11th of April 2014, we had the opportunity to meet with Professor Urs von Gunten.
Prof von Gunten is currently the head of Competence Center for Drinking Water in Eawag and a full professor
at Ecole Polytechnique F?d?rale de Lausanne (EPEL). He was also the advisor of Prof Yunho Lee when he did
a postdoc in Eawag.

During his brief stay in Gwangju, Prof von Gunten held individual discussions with some students, visited
낙안읍성in Suncheon, and gave lectures in GIST and Seoul National University (SNU).

For the individual discussion, students had the chance to ask or consult to Prof von Gunten about their
research topics. Meanwhile in 낙안읍성, Prof von Gunten had a glance on how was the traditional life in Korea
hundred years ago, which comprises of korean old government system, traditional houses, and daily lifestyle.

As for the lectures in both GIST and SNU, Prof von Gunten mainly talked about oxidation processes in water
treatment for micropollutants elimination, especially on how the approach is being practised in Switzerland.
He briefly explained about micropollutant problem in urban water management and how it is being assessed in
other countries. In addition, he also described the application of oxidants in water treatment for elimination of
micropollutants, which include the role of kinetics in the oxidation efficiency, the formation of oxidation by-
products (transformation products) and degradation products, advanced oxidation process (AOP), and
biological effects after oxidative treatment.

Overall it was an enjoyable and resourceful moment with Prof von Gunten. ^_^

and bachelor graduates.
This semester, WQTL residents receiving graduate degrees include: Eunjin Huh, Hayjoong Chung, and Jihye
Park.
It has been great pleasure for the WQTL members to be able to work with them, even to the point that we
have become more than just colleagues.
Among the three graduates, only Hayjoong decided to stay as a researcher to collect few more data for her
experiment.
We sincerely congratulate Eunjin, Hayjoong, and Jihye for succesfully completing their study. We wish them

They are Soyoung, Donghyun, Hyoju, Dongsik, Sung Eun, and Woongbae.
Soyoung and Donghyun are master course students who are transferring from Soil Environmental Laboratory (SEL), meanwhile Hyoju and Dongsik are joining our group as master course students (freshman) starting this Spring semester 2014. 

On the other hand, Sung Eun is a researcher who has completed her master course in United Kingdom (UK) and Woongbae is an undergraduate student who is joining our laboratory as an intern.

We would like to sincerely welcome the newcomers to WQTL. 

Hopefully we can all build good friendship with each other, create a conducive learning atmosphere, and improve our research skills!
